Rhubarb Liqueur and spring planting

As it finally is getting a little bit warmer it is time for planting! Well, winter still seems to linger with the odd frosty morning but the onions are looking amazing, the garlic and the winter broad beans as well. Potatoes has gone in and fingers crossed it won’t get too cold for them.

It is too early for seeds and none propagated in-house. The plan has been laid for what needs to go in the ground and when, and where we can apply crop rotation. The chillies last year didn’t do to well, the summer didn’t seem to be hot enough.

I can’t wait for everything to start growing and the rhubarb is already looking good and am already planning what to do with it. One of last years favourites was the liqueur, it was so nice it all went as am sure it will only get even better over time.

Rhubarb summer liqueur

  • A big sterilised air tight jar
  • Rhubarb
  • a handful of strawberries
  • the peel, cut in chunks from a lemon
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 bottle of vodka
  • 3-5 dl sugar (depending on how much you make and how sweet you want it to be)

cut up the fruits and peel and fill the jar, fill to the brim with vodka and let stand for 2 weeks, in sunshine if possible to release as much flavour as possible. Then add the sugar, keep like that for about 4 weeks, shake every now and then and the sieve the liquid in to a sterilised bottle and let stand, if possible for a few months but if you don’t have that time for as long as you can leave it.
