Hosting a barbecue in the UK can be a bit of a gamble. The weather is less than reliable and rain never seems to be far off! This weekend we were off to Kent for a nice summer barbecue at Oli and Amanda’s and everyone was asking the question “do you think it will rain?” Well, this weekend it didn’t, the day started with a bit of a grey haze but once that lifted it was a beautiful and sunny day! It is a bit like winning the lottery and I was very pleased to be wearing shorts!
The garden had something that I have to admit I immediately wanted, a pizza oven and this was such a simple but clever, and good looking solution!
The garden was full of beautiful flowers and I could not resist taking a few pictures.
The invite promised a lots of food, lots of salads and lots of booze and there was plenty of everything! We started with refreshing drinks with all of us enjoying the unexpected sunshine!
The beer came from a local brewery, Westerham, it was cool and so perfect for sharing! Beer doesn’t always travel well so what better than to get the beer from a local brewer!
There was a range of food to come, 4 different salads served under a shady parasol.
One was tomato and mozarella in slices
There was a lamb steak cooking in the pizza oven and if you got close enough and listened you could hear it cook! The barbecue was fired up and out came a range of meats for grilling starting with some German bratwurst.
And hamburgers and ribs.
There was whole mackerel, super fresh, it got a brushing with some olive oil and some salt
It was a delicious barbecue. I could not stop eating! We had such a great time , there was that mandatory silence at first when everyone are eating but then conversation started again! Everyone had seconds and some had thirds (myself included) and then all I could manage was another G&T from that clever box that kept it cold all day!
It was one of the girls birthday the day before and what is a birthday without a cake? It was a delicious sponge cake with cream and strawberries, it might be my favourite cake combination and so perfect on a summers day!
There were cupcakes as well, baked that morning and they looked amazing!
Cupcakes are so pretty and I always wonder if I I should try making some one day! Saying that I have been thinking about it for a long time (years actually) so it might not happen.
It was a great day, full of fun, sunshine and some great foods. With a full belly and lots more freckles from the sunshine we had to say good bye and make our way back home but hope to see the guys again soon!

Not strictly cycling, but a fine review of a BBQ we hosted this weekend when we got lucky with the weather – no wheels turned though.
Looks like an awesome BBQ!
hi Francesca
