Foraging for chestnuts

A few weeks ago whilst walking the dogs we saw that the chestnut trees were absolutely covered in chestnuts. They were not ready yet so this weekend we went back to see if they were ready and they were! It was a lovely Saturday morning and it was so nice to be out in the open.

When we came to the chestnut trees the ground was covered! We picked lots in only 20 minutes, before it was time to head back. It was only when we came home and it was time to take care of them that we realised quite how many we had picked! It was such an abundance we gave quite a lot away to our delighted neighbours! In the end it worked out quite well!

The man did the main bulk in peeling the chestnuts, luckily they were so fresh the peel was not too hard but it was still quite a lot of work due to the amount.

Once that was done I chopped them up and roasted them in the oven.

Just chopping them up took much longer than expected but it was well worth it. I ended up with very pretty jars and some of them will make Christmas presents.

Chestnuts lends themselves to both sweet and savory dishes and I will just have to experiment and see how to use them.
